Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre

Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.

These two desperately young souls were simply dumped on a roundabout beside a busy road and left to their own fate. Luckily, Almoradí officers managed to get them literally inside the police station and hold them in a little pen for stray dogs until Rod arrived. He returned quite upset at how pitiful these two were.

The little brown donkey, Chocolate Twinkle, was six months old at the most – still trying to suckle as he’d obviously just been taken away from his mum – while the white donkey, Marble Dingo, was probably only about eight months.

Both were extremely malnourished and full of worms, and Marble Dingo had a nasty nose injury caused by either bailing twine or some sort of too-tight head collar that had been kept on permanently and caused an injury.

These two were very timid and frightened at first and we took their introduction to rescue centre life very slowly, firstly keeping them in a comfortable stable together, then letting them out into a slightly larger area in our walkway, and finally turning them loose into a special small field we built from wooden pallets.

It has been wonderful to see them grow in confidence as they learn to trust humans again.

If you're wondering about this pair's slightly odd names, we held an open day competition to name these babies but unfortunately kept having to delay drawing the result due to bad weather. In the meantime, we named them Chocolate and Marble, and the names kind of stuck! So we decided to give them dual names.

Twinkle was drawn out of the hat for Chocolate, while Marble landed the name Dingo.

That suggestion came from Bart, a member of the Berlin Crocs Australian Rules Football team – yes, they play Aussie Rules footy in Germany! He donated quite a lot of money in hopes that one of our donkeys would be named after a fellow team member, who is apparently nicknamed Dingo. It seems Bart's luck was in.

We hope little Dingo the donkey becomes something of a mascot for the Berlin Crocs and brings them a lot of good luck.
