2010 Captain Comes Home
Captain comes Home
Captain has now been released from Alicante animal hospital and is back at the rescue centre.
It was touch and go whether Captain would survive when we found him, but he has proved to be a real fighter. As well as being in a state of near starvation, Captain had a severe infection in his leg. A puncture wound to the back of his knee had been left untreated, and abscesses, fluid and infection had formed. He underwent an operation to drain the fluid and abscesses.
Captain gained an incredible 18 kilos during his three weeks in the hospital. He is still stick thin, though, which just shows how badly malnourished he was. Captain is a long way from full health and will continue to need lots of care and medication for some time.
Hope settled in immediately at the centre, and after three weeks of care and good quality food she has gained in weight and confidence. It was thought that she was in foal when she was found, but closer veterinary examination revealed she had already given birth. We do not know what happened to the foal.
The two horses were reunited on Captain's return and now have adjoining stables at night and share a field during the day.
On August 15th, a youth was detained by police on suspicion of mistreatment in relation to this case.
A 19-year-old youth has been arrested on suspicion of mistreatment of animals following the rescue of Captain and Hope.
