Easy Horse Care Rescue centre co-founder appears as witnesses in starved horse court case
Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre co-founder Sue Weeding has appeared before court as a witness for the prosecution in a case against a man who allegedly left his horse to starve to death last March.
Sue attended court on April 23, along with the rescue centre’s veterinarian and a local resident who witnessed the alleged cruelty and made a statement to police.
The rescue centre became involved in the case on March 19 last year, when three police departments called Sue and husband Rod, to a falling-down building on waste ground in San Louis Torrevieja, where the young horse was being kept with several other horses and donkeys.
The horse was in a terrible state,”Sue said” starved and extremely dehydrated. Together with our vet Dorothea we tried everything possible for him but sadly we had arrived to late to save him, so this poor young animal had to be put to sleep.
“The police were horrified by what they saw, as we all were, and they vowed to take the matter further. We are very impressed that they stayed true to their word, ” Sue said.”
The court date was a preliminary hearing and authorities will now decide whether there is enough evidence to push for full prosecution.
“Although it was too late to save this young horse, it has created a situation to move animal welfare another step forward in Spain. The terrible treatment of this horse has not been forgotten,
“This again just proves how important it is for people who witness animal cruelty to go to the police and make an official statement, which is called a denuncia here in Spain.”
The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the Rojales centre.
