Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre

Following the much published tragedy recently, when the EHCRC were unable to save the life of a young horse starved to death in premises on the outskirts of Torrevieja, the morning of Monday March 24th was a much more joyous occasion.

The day started as normal. It was nine o'clock, all of the seventy eight equines had been fed and those stabled overnight were being turned out to spend the day in their respective paddocks.

At nine thirty all this changed when one of the nine mares rescued at the beginning of March along with five other male horses from an illegal horse dealer in Callosa de Segura, lay down in her paddock, and proceeded to give birth to a healthy foal.

Sue Weeding, co founder of the EHCRC in Rojales takes up the story, " We knew the mare was with foal but Dorothea our vet believed she was only about seven months pregnant because of her size. However, the foal was small because of severe malnutrition of the mother. If she had been born three weeks earlier this foal would have not survived. The mare was chained to a concrete wall with several other horses in very close proximity and the foal would probably have been trampled on.

After our initial shock and surprise everyone who was here working at the centre that morning rallied round to separate the mare and her baby from the other eight rescued mares sharing the paddock with her. Dorothea was called and she came immediately and checked over the pair and all was well health wise. The next thing we had to do was ensure the foal could not get through or under the electric fencing separating the paddocks and wander into danger where our other many equines reside. We wanted to ensure that the mother was still in close contact with her companions which would reduce considerably her stress level.

We enlisted the assistance of Linda and Paul at Cookeaze in Dolores who supply us with our food for our Sunday afternoon open days. They kindly donated several wooden pallets to make part of the solid barrier to fence of the new arrival and her mother. The remainder of the secure area came from our great friends and supporters at Rojales Town Hall who rushed to our aid with several large plastic road barriers."

Sue continues, " Life here at the EHCRC is full of ups and downs and our happiness at the arrival of this beautiful young horse turned to sadness two days later. Arisco, a magnificent old Spanish military horse who we rescued in January 2012 was diagnosed with renal failure and we, on the advice of Dorothea, had him put to sleep. He had two happy years with us and was a favourite with everyone who met him. He will be missed by all of us here who were close to him. Life of course goes on and we welcome visitors on our Sunday afternoon open days to come and see our new arrival"

The EHCRC will ensure that your event receives the maximum press and radio publicity plus coverage on their Face book site prior to and after the event.
Every single cent donated to the EHCRC charity or spent in any one of their five charity shops located in La Zenia, Los Montesinos, La Siesta, Ciudad Quesada La Marina or Guardamar goes towards the upkeep and care of the horses, donkeys and ponies in their care.
Large items such as furniture that is donated can be collected from your house and likewise delivered after purchase from their charity shops. Contact the charity shop hotline on 636 062 000 for this service and also if you would like to become a volunteer and work for a few hours or days in any of the shops including the new one on La Marina urbanisation next to Cuts R Us in Avenida Londres.
Why not visit the centre on their open days: the first Sunday of every month between 1 pm and 4 pm where refreshments and tasty food are available in the garden café. Entrance is free. The first horse tour commences at 2 pm where you can get close to, and meet the residents and the new foal and see first hand where your money is spent.
