Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre

Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.

In true Christmas style the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre had a visit from the three wise men last week who wanted their help with a rescued mule.

The men showed up at the Rescue Centre's recent Christmas Carol concert asking for help and immediately Rod and Sue Weeding agreed and met with the three brothers the following day. They had found the mule on a roundabout and walked him 10km to their building plot in Catral. After contacting the police and coming to a dead end as to who owned the animal they have been caring for him ever since but, having no previous experience or knowledge of horses and being short of money the brothers needed a more permanent solution.

"They had him for 4 or 5 weeks and he took a turn for the worse and that is when they came to us," said Sue who agreed to take him in once their vet Dorothea had given him the all clear. "There are a few problems and we are concerned as to what the illness is but he is here and we are keeping him separated from the other horses as a precaution. It took us a long time to get him on the trailer and bring him back and at one point we thought we may have to walk him back to the Centre. We are not sure of his history but he has had a hard life judging by his arthritis."

Settled in his stable, the team at the Rescue Centre had thought of a Christmas name for their festive friend but that didn't quite happen and Dexter it is! "Dexter just popped in to our heads!" Jokes Sue, "He is lovely, a gentle giant."

The team are trying to coax Dexter to eat to build up his strength and are welcoming any large donations of Christmas leftovers of carrots and apples as that is the only thing he is currently eating.

The EHCRC relies only on charitable donations. Anybody can make a difference by sponsoring one of the horses for as little as 5€ per month by contacting the centre directly. For more information visit www.easyhorsecare.net or call Sue on 652 021 980.
