Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre

Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.

Rescued: June 2, 2015

Nakita is a bay mare, believed to have been aged five when surrendered to our rescue centre in mid-2015. Back then, she was nothing but skin and bones.

A woman had rescued Nakita from her previous owner amid concerns she was not being fed. But despite offering Nakita plenty of good-quality feed, this woman couldn’t get any weight on her either. We’re told a veterinarian was unable to find any reason for her worsening malnourishment and Nakita simply grew thinner and thinner.

Desperate and unsure what to do, this woman finally surrendered Nakita to us. Our equine veterinarian Dorothea promptly began a series of blood tests, but the results were baffling – nothing seemed wrong and yet Nakita was continuously losing weight.

So we decided the only course of action was to take Nakita to the Alicante horse hospital, where specialist veterinarians began a series of tests.

They quickly discovered Nakita’s white blood cell count was elevated, indicating some kind of internal infection. With little more to go on, they held Nakita at the hospital for several days under observation.

After conducting x-rays, veterinarians found fluid on Nakita’s lungs, trachea and around her heart – likely the reason she couldn’t keep any weight on. They immediately began a course of antibiotics and within just a few weeks, Nakita finally began to return to health.

Veterinarians still don’t know exactly what infection struck Nakita and we can’t be sure it will never return. But for now, she is very happy and healthy, though a very strong-minded girl.

Aged about five when rescued, Nakita has never been ridden and is quite a handful. She is on our adoption list, but would require a very experienced person to bring her on. She also suffers sweet-itch, an allergy to the bites of midges, so requires extra care in spring.

She now shares a field with Bella, Goldie, Mystery and Diplomat and keeps a keen eye on everyone who passes by her field.
